AUDIOVISUAL BRIDGES

CineBH - Belo Horizonte International Film Festival reaches its 12th edition from August 28 to September 2, 2018, consolidated as a platform for formation, exchange, promotion and discussion around the most significant issues of contemporary film production.

Throughout the six days of programming, free to the public, the 12th CineBH will take over six spaces in the capital of Minas Gerais – Fundação Clóvis Salgado, Cine Theatro Brasil Vallourec, MIS Cine Santa Tereza, Praça Duque de Caxias,  Sesc Palladium, Teatro Sesiminas – to present a selection of 75 national and international films, in premieres and thematic screenings. We will promote debates, dialogues and business meetings. We will also invest in the training and qualification of film professionals, offering workshops, a Masterclass and a film lab. The program called Cine-Expression - The School Goes to the Movies benefits students and teachers of the public school system and promotes the Mostrinha de Cinema, a screening series dedicated to children and youth.

In this edition, the theme Latin American Bridges, proposed by our curatorial team – film critics Francis Vogner dos Reis, Marcelo Miranda and Pedro Butcher –, make important proposals to discuss Latin American cinema, its culture, its economy, its history, its aesthetics and, above all, its current conjuncture, both from an economic, political and aesthetic point of view through films, debates, dialogues and meetings. The intention is to discuss and share with the audience the concerns and images of a changing time in which the speed of events often runs over the perception of the facts.

On the screen, 75 national and international films, in premieres and thematic screenings (27 features, 3 medium-length films and 45 short films), a total of 44 movie screenings with titles from 13 Brazilian states (BA, CE, DF, ES, GO, MG, RJ, SP, PB, PE, PR, RS and SC) and 13 countries – Brazil, Germany, Portugal, Argentina, Chile, USA, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Qatar, Colombia, Cuba, Bolivia, and Uruguay.

The 12th CineBH opens with the national premiere of the feature film Sol Alegria, a production from Paraiba directed by the filmmaker and actor Tavinho Teixeira. At the opening we will also have a tribute to the Argentinian production company El Pampero Cine with the awarding of the trophy Troféu Horizonte. El Pampero Cine is an independent production company founded in 2002 by Mariano Llinás, Laura Citarella, Agustín Mendilaharzu and Alejo Moguilansky that became internationally prominent in the contemporary audiovisual scene. It has been pointed out as one of the most remarkable film initiatives of the continent, proposing new models of filmmaking.

As part of the tribute, producer and director Laura Citarella, one of the members of El Pampero Cine, attends the event to teach a Masterclass and follow the exhibition of two films made by the group: La Mujer de los Perros (2015), directed by Citarella herself; and the Brazilian premiere of La Flor, El Pampero's most recent work, directed by Mariano Llinás, which is one of the most anticipated films of the year - awarded in the last edition of Bafici (Argentina) and also selected for the Locarno festival. With almost 14 hours in length, the film will be divided into three screenings.

"Latin American Bridges" is also comprised of the contemporary features La Telenovela Errante (Raúl Ruiz and Valéria Sarmiento, Chile, 2017), Antígona (Pedro González-Rubio, Mexico, 2018) and Cocote (Nelson Carlo de los Santos Arias, Dominican Republic/Argentina, 2017); and the historical short films Agarrando Pueblo (Carlos Mayolo and Luis Ospina, Colombia, 1977), Revolución (Jorge Sanjinés, Bolivia, 1963), Me matan si no trabajo y si trabajo me matan (Raimundo Gleyzer, Argentina, 1974), Me gustan los estudiantes (Mario Handler, Uruguay, 1968), Blá Blá Blá (Andrea Tonacci, Brazil, 1971), La Isla del Tesoro (Sara Gomez, Cuba, 1969) and Cómo, Por Qué y Para Qué se asesina a un General (Santiago Álvarez, Cuba, 1971).

The Historical Dialogues screening series is also included in the central theme, with the participation of film critics and researchers João Luiz Vieira (Brazil) and Roger Koza (Argentina), who have chosen three films to be screened and discussed. Koza selected Pajarito Goméz (Rodolfo Kuhn, Argentina, 1965); and João Luiz chose Carnaval Atlântida (José Carlos Burle and Carlos Manga, Brazil, 1952) and Víctimas del Pecado (Emilio Fernández "Indio", Mexico, 1950).

The Contemporary screening series includes some Brazilian and international highlights in premieres at Belo Horizonte. From Minas Gerais, Espera, by Cao Guimarães, and Baixo Centro, by Samuel Marotta and Ewerton Belico;  from Espírito Santo, Mata Negra, by Rodrigo Aragão; and from Bahia, Edgard Navarro's Abaixo a Gravidade. Among the foreign titles, there will be screenings of Tempo Comum (Portugal), by Susana Nobre; Ted Fendt's Classical Period (Germany); and Black Mother (USA), by Khalik Allah.

In the CineMundi series, we will show two Brazilian features who have participated in previous Brasil CineMundi editions and managed to carry out their projects in international co-productions: Aly Muritiba's Ferrugem and Gustavo Pizzi's Benzinho.

Curated by Paula Kimo, the City in Movement series, created in 2016 to cover the creative and productive discourses of poignant and urgent themes in Belo Horizonte and surroundings, focuses on the theme "Daily Displacements". The focus of this edition is the city in its constant, habitual movement, which keeps it alive, both from the point of view of its powers, and in relation to its weaknesses. The goal is to reflect the place of the camera in the production of social, cultural and political memory, in films that interconnect in real and virtual spaces and migrate from the streets to the screens of the cinema, from social networks to the movie theater, from the peripheries to the center of the metropolis. In five thematic screenings, 16 films will be presented (13 shorts, 2 medium-length films and one feature). After the screenings, Conversations will be held with the film crews and guests.

18 films from nine different states (MG, GO, ES, CE, PE, SP, RS and DF) will be screened in the selection of short films, part of the Contemporary series, signed by curator Pedro Maciel Guimarães. "This year we have short films that reverberate today's aesthetic positions: how to position oneself critically in the face of contemporary world events; how to occupy the urban space affected by compulsory removals; how to deal with self-assertion issues; how to rework genre codes in short narratives", says curator Pedro Maciel.

The Brasil CineMundi - International Coproduction Meeting, which is in its 9th edition, will bring together dozens of audiovisual professionals who come exclusively to Brazil to participate in the event, to join future Brazilian film projects in feature film and know part of our production. It will be attended by 23 guests from the world audiovisual industry from 12 countries: Cuba, Spain, Chile, Argentina, Norway, Switzerland, USA, France, Uruguay, Italy, Germany and Brazil.

A total of 20 projects were selected for meetings with co-producers during the 9th Brasil CineMundi, distributed in three categories: CineMundi (10), DocBrasil Meeting (5) and Foco Minas (5). The projects come from seven Brazilian states, with the presence of Minas Gerais (8), São Paulo (4), Rio de Janeiro (3), Bahia (2), Espírito Santo (1), Goiás (1) and Pernambuco (1).

The Audiovisual Formation Program brings together 30 prominent Brazilian and foreign professionals in five debates, four panels, a masterclass, a lab and three workshops. Its purpose is to provide conceptual and practical tools for training professionals, exchange experiences among different agents in the audiovisual industry. At the same time, we aim to generate exchanges, promote meetings, dialogues, discussions and establish global contact networks and connections focused on the audiovisual market.

With the aim of forming new audiences and inserting families and children into cinema programming, the 12th CineBH promotes the Mostrinha, believing in the importance of investing in the gaze of young audiences, who will be the spectators of Brazilian cinema of the future. Another training activity is Cine-Expression - The School Goes to the Movies, a program that brings together cinema and education languages and will attend students and educators of the educational network with a special programming. Six film screenings will be held to benefit more than 3,000 students.

At the heart of Santa Tereza neighborhood, Praça Duque de Caxias, where the event was held between 2007 and 2011, with outdoor screenings and in the old Cine Santa Tereza, now transformed into MIS Cine Santa Tereza, the venue will again receive the installation of an open-air cinema, with a capacity of more than 500 seats: Cine Sesc at the Square, where the second edition of the Classics at the Square program takes place. There will be four titles of great historical and nostalgic appeal screened outdoors. The selected films are all celebrating their original releases and rescue the ludic aspect of watching great entertainment in a public space. We will present: Superman - The Movie (Richard Donner, 1978); The Yellow Submarine (George Dunning, 1968); Saturday Night Fever (John Badham, 1978) and The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! (David Zucker, 1988).

Another novelty of this edition is the installation of the Central do Cinema - a set of scenographic space designed to receive the installations of Tenda Brasil CineMundi, the Audiovisual Formation Program, coordination, logistics and press rooms, Cine-Café, Cine-Loja, Living Space, Relationship Schedule, Cine-Concert and Cine-Lounge with the programming of panels, concerts and video art and participation of filmmakers, producers, actors and special guests. The space also includes the Cine Humberto Mauro - traditional cinema of Belo Horizonte dedicated to the programming of independent and historic films.

CineBH, the film event in the capital of Minas Gerais, creates bridges for dialogue and sharing of stories. A space for training, exchange, releasing and discussion of the most significant current film production. Each edition renews its commitment to establish dialogue among cultures, expand business opportunities for Brazilian cinema and promote the connection of professionals with the audiovisual market in exchange with the world.
